Tim Hall’s photographs document his own Grand Tour through Europe’s most famous mountains. In the spirit of artists and writers who have gone before he has forged his own route through the peaks and valleys of the Alps, from Chamonix in France, through the famous resorts of Switzerland and Austria to Cortina in Italy. Beyond the Clouds charts his journey spanning eight years and several modes of transportation: on foot, skis by car, helicopter and train.
Tim Hall’s photographs of the Arlberg mountain range in Austria are powerful evocations of the Burkean Sublime. The works project the feeling of the fragility and ephemerality of human existence, opposed to the eternal mountain peaks: remote, massive, white, abstract. Artists and writers from Turner and Mary Shelley to DH Lawrence and Peter Doig have been inspired by the Alps; and this awareness of the alien and magnificent power of the natural world is what is made brilliantly clear in Hall’s incredibly powerful works.- Ivor Braka , Art Dealer
